One Seed Away from Harvest: Reflections from the Homestead
Many people wait until the time between Christmas and New Years to reflect and set goals, but for me, it always works best in September.

The view from our deck every fall reminds me why fall is the season for reflection, nature is slowing down, yet still full of beauty. |
After the long days of summer, when the garden takes a bit of attention, fall sweeps in and brings on a new kind of busy.
It's the harvest season after all and that keeps my hands busy.
Freezing, canning, dehydrating and seed saving.
Sounds time consuming and stressful, but I find if my hands are busy my mind is quiet. The perfect state for me to reflect and plan.
The fall air is crisp, the leaves scatter across the yard, and I often find myself standing in the garden with hands tucked in my sweater pockets, quietly taking stock of it all (while listening to the sound of our weighted gauge dance gently on our pressure canner, of course.)

During these moments, I am often brought back to the first time I heard the phrase:
“You are one seed away from harvest.”
It was many years ago, and though it was meant to encourage gardeners, it quickly rooted itself in my heart as something so much deeper.
One single seed. So small, so easy to overlook, yet holds the potential to change everything.
And that seed doesn't need to be for flowers or food. Maybe it's a small moment, an experience, a lesson or even a dream that just. shifts. everything.
Sometimes the goals I plant feel slow to sprout. Projects I start seem to stall. Even personal habits I try to build don’t always stick right away. But just like the dates on a seed packet, a carrot isn't always ready when we expect it to be.
With patience and the true understanding that what is meant to happen will in the proper time, the harvest eventually comes.
Fall invites us all to pause and ask:
What seeds did I plant this year that thrived?
Which ones struggled, but still showed promise?
And which ones might need to be replanted differently next season?
Again, these questions don’t just apply to our gardens. They apply to the dreams, goals, and everyday choices that shape our lives.
Reflection isn’t about regret, it’s about noticing the seeds we’ve sown, learning from them, and preparing for the next season.

| A reminder that seasons shift, but growth continues. |
So as I walk through our gardens that are starting to quiet and get ready for rest, I carry this reminder with me: you’re never too far from your desires. Remember, you are just "one seed away from harvest".
Until next time,
