Say Goodbye to Stains the Natural Way: My Tried & True Methods

Stains are just part of everyday life, especially in a household as busy as ours! Between kids running around outside, gardening, cooking, and of course our bright white martial arts uniforms that end up drenched in sweat, yet still need to stay as white as possible ..

It's safe to say our laundry sees it all.

Over the years, I’ve tested different ways to deal with stains, and I’ve landed on a few natural methods that work wonders without needing harsh chemicals.

These are my tried-and-true techniques for keeping clothes fresh, clean, and naturally stain-free!

Why I Choose Natural Stain Removal

Have you ever thrifted an article of clothing that smells like chemical fragrances even after washing multiple times?

Or

Opened your windows on a gorgeous summer day just to have the intense smell of laundry detergent wafting in your windows from a neighbours home?

I feel if these chemical fragrances can last for weeks on our clothes, there is a very high likelihood they are not that healthy for us.

I like knowing exactly what’s touching our clothes (and ultimately, our skin), and many conventional laundry products and stain removers are full of these strong chemicals, perfumes, and brighteners that I’d rather avoid.

Using natural alternatives not only saves us quite a bit of money, but also keeps our laundry routine aligned with our homestead values - simple, safe, and sustainable.

Castile Soap: My Secret Weapon Against Grease & Sweat

Liquid Castile soap applied directly to a yellow stain on white karate gi pants.
Castile soap works wonders on sweat & food stains, especially on bright white pants!

When using it for stain removal, liquid or bar form will work just fine. Simply scrub a little directly on any oily or sweaty spots before tossing clothes into the wash. Let sit for 10-15min for tough stains.

It’s simple, quick, and honestly one of the most effective tricks I’ve found.

Peroxide & Washing Soda: The Spot-Removing Duo

Hydrogen peroxide is my go-to for quick spot treatment.

Another natural go-to is hydrogen peroxide that I made more convenient by refilling a spray bottle of peroxide that I had originally purchased at our local dollar store, making it super easy to grab and use. A quick spritz directly on fresh stains works like magic.

For tougher stains, I pair peroxide with washing soda (not baking soda. This one’s more efficient and made for laundry) and our liquid Castile soap laundry detergent.

Washing soda sprinkled on karate gi stains while peroxide is sprayed over top.

For stubborn stains, I layer washing soda with peroxide for extra cleaning power.

I spray with peroxide, sprinkle a little washing soda on the stain, spray with peroxide again and then add a few drops of our homemade laundry detergent for good measure. I then gently rub it in before washing and let it sit, sometimes long enough for the washing soda to become hard and crusty (not necessary, but I find it helps lift the stain on whites far more).

This combo will lift stubborn stains without fading fabric!

Mrs. Stewart’s Bluing: Brightening Our Whites Without Bleach

Adding Mrs. Stewart’s Bluing to the rinse cycle for brighter whites.

A little Mrs. Stewart’s Bluing in our wash routine keeps our whites looking crisp.

The G.O.A.T as the cool kids would say 😉

Whites can be the hardest to keep bright naturally, and bleach over time can cause whites to yellow and the fabric to weaken.  Bluing is a "trick" that eliminates the need for bleach and works beautifully!

Mrs. Stewarts Bluing is an old-fashioned laundry staple that adds just a touch of blue to the rinse water, cancelling out any yellow tinge in the fabric, keeping whites looking crisp and fresh.

Laundry rinse water tinted blue from Mrs. Stewart’s Bluing.

That touch of blue in the rinse water cancels out yellowing.

This is especially important in our home, since our boys wear bright white karate gi’s throughout the month.

Instead of sending them to the dry cleaner (something we avoid unless absolutely necessary due to the cost, the chemicals, and the negative effects on the environment), I rely on bluing to keep their uniforms looking sharp!

Bright white gi, hard-earned medals, and no harsh chemicals needed.

When using, be sure to follow the directions on the back of the bottle! If not diluted correctly into cold water, you do risk dying your articles blue!

Bluing is affordable, effective, and a lot kinder to both our family and the planet. It also allows us to have a bright white duvet cover even with multiple kids jumping all over it every morning while they wake us up! lol

Harnessing the Sun for Natural Stain Removal

As you can see, the stain is barely noticeable now! Placed in the sun for extra good measure.

One of the simplest and often most overlooked stain-fighters is something we all have access to: the sun!

Have you ever unintentionally lightened a colourful item of clothing, when forgetting to bring a clothes you hung outside... for days on end? I know I sure have!

Sunlight helps to lighten stains and brighten fabrics without any extra effort.

After washing, I like to hang our whites in direct sunlight to let nature do some of the work for me.

This method makes a big difference on those stubborn marks that even peroxide and washing soda can’t fully erase*

Best of all, it costs nothing, uses no chemicals, and adds that wonderful fresh-air scent to our laundry.

*Be sure to do this once the stain is lightened with the previously mentioned methods. If you allow a dark stain to fully dry, the stain will set in further. You can spray water on the stain while out in the sun, keeping it wet longer and helping to add some extra stain fighting power. I would avoid spraying peroxide in the sun as you risk yellowing.

Keeping It Simple & Effective

Dry & stain free - ready for the next tournament!

Natural stain removal doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. With just a few staple items like Castile soap, peroxide, washing soda, Mrs. Stewart’s bluing, and even the sun, I can tackle just about any stain that comes our way...

...like the chickpea salad dressing that dripped onto the uniform pants in all the above pictures! Apparently, our young athlete was completely famished after competing - so much so that he forgot to get changed before diving into lunch!

These methods keep our laundry routine eco-friendly and effective, all while avoiding harsh chemicals.
